As a former resident of Kona Paradise, I find it unconscionable that nothing has been done to regulate
the out -of- control fish collecting that has been taking place at Pebble Beach for years now There should
be a rule about limited collecting. Better yet. why don't these fish collectors lease from NELHA and
create their own self- sustaining fish ponds'? They are depleting what little is left of our beautiful reefs
and shoreline fish population. Additionally, there should be a limited number of "licenses" for this
practice.
Furthermore. our shoreline fish population is also rapidly dwindling away in such places as Kahaluu
Bay. Honaunau Bay and Kealakekua Bay. thanks to the masses of people in the water with their
sunscreen, or worse, urinating in the water and releasing god knows what pharmaceuticals and toxins
into our ocean. Fair Wind should be required to tell their patrons to use the bathrooms on hoard, rather
than urinating in the water. Think about it. Sixty people in the water at one time in a so- called marine
conservation zone. Why are there no more wana at Captain Cook Monument, for example. when 15
years ago. they were thriving? 1 know that DI.NR has a limited budget. but how hard is it to pick up the
phone and call Fair Wind and ask them to tell their patrons to use their bathroom on -board instead of
polluting the water'? Zero budget consideration here, folks.
Also. why are some of the million - dollar homes along the bay front in Napoopoo (and other shoreline
areas like Alii Drive) still on cesspool, spewing their toxins into a marine conservation zone') These
homeowners should be required to retrofit for septic tanks. They are making money hand over fist with
their vacation rentals, yet they are contributing to the demise of our waters when their raw sewage, dish -
washing soap, laundry detergent, etc flows freely into the bay through the porous lava rocks
