A RESOLUTION CELEBRATING THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE KONA Ol)TDOOR CIRCLE
WHEREAS, fifty years ago,' on November 29, 1948, the first meeting oftheKona Outdoor
Circle washelq at the Central Kona Union Church HalUn Kealakekua, Kona, Hawai'i; and

, WHEREAS, concern for the beauty, health and integrity of the environment brought 28
women together to found the' Kona Outdoor Circle; and
WHEREAS, from its humble begirmingsin 19,48;the~ona Outdoor Circle has risen to a '
position of leadership in the protection and car~ of the natural beauty and splendor of the Kona
District; and

WHEREAS, with a membership that grew to 100inthe, nineteen-fifties and sixties, 200'in '
the seventies, 500 in the eighties and nearly 700 in the nineties, the Kona Outdoor Circle has,
helped immeasurably to make the Kona distriCt a uniquely attractive place, for residents, and one'
of the most desirable tourist destinations iri the world today; and '
WHEREAS; in its half-century of community service, the Kona Outdoor Circle has
labored to beautify the environment by plantil1g and replanting the borders of roads and
highways with palms, bougainvillea, shower trees, plumeria, and other flowering trees and '
shrubs; and '
WHEREAS, the dedicated volunteers,()f the Kona Outdoor Circle also have been
instrumental in the cleanup, design, and landscaping of numerous public areas, such as thel ' '
public parks at Oneo Bay, White Sands Beach, N~po'opo'o, Kahalu'u and Pahoehoe Beac~,
and the publicfacilities at Vano Hall, Hale Halawai, Kona Health Center, Honaunau School anq
, Emma Square; and
, , ,
WHEREAS, the Kona Outdoor Circle has encouraged public awareness and cooperation
through its educational programs, including native Hawaiian plant propagation, anti-litter
campaigns, and "Appreciation Awards" for excellence in both residential and commercial"
landscaping; and .
WHEREAS, the "Exceptional Tree Ordinance," sponsored by the Kona Outdoor CirCle
and adopted by the Hawai'i County Council, has set important standards and proven to be ~
, , valuable conservation measure for our island community; and
,WHEREAS, through the generosity of its members and the communityat large, the Kona
, Outdoor Circle has been able to protectthe historic Kealakowifa heiau site and develop ani", '
outstanding headquarters, botanical garden, and educational center at Holualoa makai;an1. .

WHEREAS; the Kona OutdoorC,ircle has,consistently worked to improve the quality of
life in Kona, notonly by beautifying the landscape and promoting co rnmun ity educational
opportunities,. but by working faithfully forthe public interest in various a.estheticand
