'35 3it) 98 ' A RESOLUTION FOR.ACCEPTANCEOF A GIFT OF SEVEN (7) AUTOMATIC EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATORS TO THE HAWAII COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT FROM MR. AND MRS. EARL BAKKEN WHEREAS, Earl and pons Bakken have indicated their wish to donate seven (7) Lifepak 500 Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) manufactured by Physio-Control Corporation, valued approximately in the amount of $24,500, to the County of Hawaii for use by county fire department personnel stationed at Waikoloa,Laupahoehoe, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Pahala, W8.iakea, Kaumana and Kaiulani stations, respectively; and WHEREAS, studies have shown that cardiopulmonary failure is a leading cause of sudden death and prompt use of portable 'defibrillators can more than double the survival rate of cardiac arrest victims; and WHEREAS, a medical/scientific statement issued by the American Heart ' Association and endorsed by the Board of Trustees of the Americari College of Cardiology in 1997 stated .that "automatic extenial defibrillators that accurately analyze cardiac rhythms and, if appropriate, advise/deliver an electric countershock. .. are widely used by trained emergency personnel (EMT paramedics and first responders, such as firefighters and police personnel)" ... and "have proved accurate and effective and have become ,an essential link in the 'chain of survival' as defined by the American Heart Association"; and WHEREAS, deployment of this portable technology throughout the island of Hawaii will greatly enhance the life-saving response capabilities of trained county , personnel; and WHEREAS, Dr. Earl Bakken and his wife, Doris Bakken, have made extraordinary contributions to the establishment of the North Hawaii Community Hospital and the Five Mountain Medical Community to enhance the health and well- being of Hawaii County residents, and have richly contributed to Hawaii's strategic leadershIp and reputation as America's "health state.", I ~ I I I , , . . . . NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BYTHE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the CountY of Hawaii accept the gift of seven (7) public access defibrillators for disbursement ~o stations of the Hawaii County Fire Department, and extends its heartfelt gratitude arid appreciation to Earl and Doris Bakken for their thoughtful and generous contribution to the health and safety of the people of Hawaii County. . . .
