Subject: Hawai'i County Band
Dear Mr. Yoshimoto,
My name is Nathan Pratt, and I am a 19- year -old college student studying at the Indiana
University Jacobs School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana. I am writing this message to declare my
support for the Hawai'i County Band. One of my best friends is another music student, Dylan
Suehiro, who is from Keaau. When he let me know about Mayor Kenoi's recommendation to
remove funding for the band, I could not believe that anyone would so carelessly allow such a
historic institution to be eliminated.
When you meet with the Hawai'i County Council on March 22, please show your support for the
band, its 127 -year legacy, and its importance to the people of Hawaii. As a musician and future
music educator, I cannot stress how important a people's music - making is to its livelihood. Please
choose to do everything in your legislative power to support the band.
Cutting the funding for the band would save the county government less than 0.1% of its budget;
however, eliminating the band would rob the people of the county of the joy of making and sharing
music with each other through one of the most historic musical institutions in the United States. I
implore you, do not allow this tragedy to occur.
Thank you,
Nathan Pratt
