Subject: Hawai'i County Band - Don't cut funding!
I am outraged and chagrined to learn last night that all funding for the County Band will be cut as
of June 2010. The County Band has a long and rich heritage that has provided joy to the entire
island of Hawai'i. To cut the arts is to cut the heart and beauty out of life. What will the parades be
like without the County Band? Can you imagine the Fourth of July without the 1812 Overture and
Stars & Stripes provided by real live musicians at Mooheau Bandstand? I grew up watching the
County Band at the Christmas parade and Fourth of July. When I was in high school, my first
"professional" music job was performing with the County Band. It was part of the reason that I,
personally, went into music as my professional career.
I cannot believe that this is the only way to balance the budget. What are we teaching our children
and telling our community when we say that our culture, our music and heritage aren't important?
I know that we are facing tough economic times, but there are some things in life that you are
invaluable and that you just cannot put a price tag on.
Please reconsider and keep the music and arts alive on our island!
