Although not a Band member, I was active in the HHS band, and the UH bands. This is my second letter in support of the Band, because of the following. A friend and longtime Hilo resident commented that "I take pride in the solid fact that our county remains so great because of its terrific P &R programs, the County Band being vital among them!" It really got me thinking. Many communities do not fund an organization like the County Band. There are times where going with the crowd would take away from what makes us a unique, special place to live (and visit - remember that the uniqueness of the Islands is what draws visitors here). The people of Hawaii enjoy our differences from our Mainland counterparts - -it is that local flavor, culture, and history, in addition to our tropical environment that gives us our identity, both as a community and as a destination. As you can see by the letters of support, many people consider the County Band a vital, important part of our cultural identity on the Big Isle. • Please reconsider your proposal to eliminate the County Band from any future funding. With the current budget crisis, it would be inappropriate to expect full funding for any program, so I urge you to consider partial funding options, and discuss those options with the current band members. If you could also keep in mind that to many of the Band members, the decision to completely eliminate the County Band is a very emotional and personal attack, so civility, patience and understanding of everyone involved is what I am praying for. That, and a compromise to keep the County Band playing on. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Ann Miyamura 3/8/2010 Comm. No. Ref. To: Ref. Dote ( 0
