Dear County Council Members:
I believe that Quack Moore makes an excellent point. I fully agree with her concern about losing our County Band. Some
traditions are too important to sacrifice and certainly our County Band is one of these. Hilo is such special and wonderful
place to live, and visit. This has much to do with our traditions and way of life. Our County Band is a part of Hilo's character
and has brought joy to the hearts of many, throughout the, over 30, years that I have lived in this town.
• Please consider this issue carefully.

Aloha Council members,
While it is completely obvious that budget cuts are unavoidable this year, perhaps the one particular decision to
'unfund' our County Band needs a bit more reflection.
We all realize that places like Hilo are becoming more and more rare, yet HIstoric communities can begin to
unravel quickly once tiny pieces of its culture just go quietly missing. While Hilo's 127 - year -old County Band
is generally an unheralded group, it is nonetheless a unique piece of Hilo's history that has always served to draw
the community together and to underscore its happy memories. It has accompanied the lives of many
generations.
There is a certain irony here: we have both our Envision team and our DIA generating a great amount of positive
energy towards creating cultural awareness, branding, and preserving what is special about historic Hilo, yet we
are about to dishonor one of its greatest traditions by simply allowing it to slip away without any fanfare.
Yes, budget cuts will cause pain and much unhappiness within various constituencies; however, there is a big
difference between honoring a constituency and honoring a tradition.
