As a member of the Hawaii County Band, I am asking for you to please support the su5virTal of4he n
band. Tonight, on February 25, we were informed by the Parks and Recreation repres�niative9hat
Hawaii County Band is getting cut out from the budget. As of now, the County Band i"sthe fitj and the
only one to get completely cut out from the Parks and Recreation budget.
Without the County Band, there will no longer be enthralling music before fireworks on the Fourth of
July, the monthly concerts that many of my elderly neighbors look forward to, or the patriotic music
playing during the Veteran's Ceremony. The County Band will no longer be playing at the beginning of
parades, representing the love and dedication of musicians in Hawaii. It will take away the hopes of
students whose wish is to someday join the Hawaii County Band.
I was involved in the school band since sixth grade, and I played the French Horn throughout
intermediate and high school. Throughout intermediate school, many of the students in band, including
myself, dreamed to become a member of the Hawaii County Band. In my freshman year of high school,
I was privileged to play with the County Band. Because the county had no hiring positions open for
French Horns, however, I continued to volunteer for almost four years until I finally became an official
member of the band in December 2007.
Music means so much to me, and now that I have graduated from high school, the County Band is the
only way I can continue making music with others. Since the University of Hawaii at Hilo Orchestra is
no longer funded, I have nowhere else to play my instrument with other musicians. Ever since I started
playing with the band in 2004, I have always looked forward to the Tuesday and Thursday rehearsals,
since music is what I love. Music has always been a part of my life.
Please consider this another voice for supporting the survival of the County Band. I hope this email has
touched you in some way for you to reconsider the Parks and Recreation budget that will cut out the
band.
We desperately need a voice to advocate for the County Band, and I hope that you will be the one.
