Subject: County Band Dissolution?
Dear Council Members and Powers - that -be in the Parks Department,
Whenever the coffers run on empty, it is tempting to cut the arts - -art, music, physical education. As a
long -time educator - -both teacher (K- college) and administrator, married to a retired PE teacher - -I have
faced this problem countless times and have always cut other areas of equal need, lest all students be
denied "lighting" that part of their hearts and minds that makes us all human beings. As a community,
we do not so much aspire another bureaucrat, technocrat, or paper pusher as we do people whose talents
touch our souls. When was the last time sheer joy resonated from sitting in an office, counting "beans"- -
not that bean counters don't matter!
I know you are all much too intelligent to need some "little guy on the street" like me to remind you
of our humanity. Why not revisit those priorities with equal weight from both heart and head? As a
former bureaucrat (yes, we are all a part of a bureaucracy), I would be willing to pay more taxes and
to give up some entitlements - -if this means a community made richer by and for the arts.
