Dear County Council Members:
I would like to add my comments to Ms. Robison's. I, too, was distressed to hear of the County's plan to
eliminate funding for the County Band. My mother grew up in Hilo, and has told me about how much
she enjoyed playing with the Hawai'i County Band when she was still a high school student in the '40's.
Although she was by no means a professional musician, do you know, at 80 years -old she still plays
with the Honolulu Community Band? What a legacy the Hawaii County Band has had, to give someone
confidence to go back to playing in a community band after a 30+ year lay -off! I can hardly imagine a
July 4th celebration in Hilo without the fireworks being heralded in by the 1812 Overture, played by the
Band at Mo'oheau Band Stand.
Can't you please find a way to continue its funding? Ask the people what they would be willing to
contribute to be able to say, "Yes, that's our County Band!" in every major city parade. Haven't our
children lost enough fine arts education in schools as we struggle to catch up academically, without
eliminating such a venerable source of music performance from their experience as well? Music
education has been proven to enhance more learning centers in the brain than most any other subject.
But what are our children to aspire to with their participation in band classes in school if there is no
visible outlet for their skill to be put to use in the community once they graduate?
Please reconsider your decision. Hawai'i County needs its Band!

Thank you for your service to the people of Hawai'i Island. I am a regular voter and I am writing
today about the County Band.
The Hawai'i County Band is a cultural tradition and source of pride for residents and taxpayers of
Hawai'i County. The band is a very visible symbol of the best of who we are. The musicians are
world - class. It is so uplifting to experience their monthly concerts and hear them play at other
important events. Please find another place to save money -- or raise fees. It is unbelievably short-
sighted to eliminate the County Band. The County Band has been in existence since 1883 -- through
good times and bad If we cannot think of another way to save money, shame on us. . f
