Subject: Hawaii County Band
Dear Sirs and Ma'ams,
I write to you to beg you to reconsider the Hawai'i County Band. I just learned that after June, they will no longer
be funded.
The economic vitality of this island is linked inexorably to the culture of the people of this island. To kill one more
part of that culture will no doubt be detirmental to our very way of life. How many of the really cool things can be
done away with and still expect visitors to want to come here and leave their money behind? They, our cash
cows, will stop coming when all that is left artificial habitat built in the lava fields to surround big hotels where
people are packed in like lemurs on top of each other.
It is a travesty to drop this unique bit of culture. To stop funding and give up on the band is one mure chop on
trunk of the tree that is the culture of this wonderful island. Little by litte our culture and history on this island has
been eroded, and you, as an elected caretaker of this place, should be taking care to keep these treasures alive
and well, not killing them one by one. I know the band is not native Hawaiian culture, but it is part of the history
that illustrates how we became who we are now as this island's ohana. It is part of our identity, part of the colorful
tapestry that is us.
Please protect our economy and our way of life by continuing to fund the cultural and historic heritage of this
island. You can start by cherishing and protecting the Hawaii County Band.
