I am dismayed to learn that funding for the Hawai'i County Band may be withdrawn and the Band may
thus effectively cease to exist. This is a draconian measure which I strongly urge you to reconsider.
The Band is one of the symbols for the Big Island that belongs to all the ethnic groups in the
community. It is a statement about inclusiveness and about a living history for the Big Island.
When government has financial difficulties, culture and the arts are always among the first to be
sacrificed. However, as the Merrie Monarch Festival has shown, culture can be an economic engine in
addition to its most important function as a repository of identity and a marker for community well-
being.
I recall with pleasure the Band under Maestro Baclig and its prominence in so many public events when
I lived in the Hilo area.
I urge those who steward the County of Hawai'i to reject this plan for zero funding of the Hawai'i
County Band.
