Subject: County Band
Dear Mr. Yoshimoto and Mr Onishi,
I an writing this letter to you today to urge you to support the Hawaii County Band. I
understand the band has been in existence since 1883. There are members of the band who
have devoted most of their lives to the Hawaii County Band, such as Wendell Leite, who has
been an employee for the County over 60 years.
I know several members of the county band, including Wendell Leite, as well as some who
are music teachers at various schools in the East Hawaii district. Most recently they've
been working with my daughter and other members of the intermediate schools select band,
helping them with their music skills and service. I've seen a couple of my friend's
children become members of the county band, including one who started as a senior in high
school. Its great to see the band perform in the Veteran's Memorial, Merrie Monarch, and
Volcano's 4th of July parades, monthly concerts, and numerous other parades in almost all
districts. To many community members, they are the face of the Hawaii County.
I understand that the County is facing a huge financial deficit, but to cut a program like
the Hawaii County Band without much warning is very much a disappointment. Hundreds of
County Workers, including mayors and councilmen /women, will come and go, but the Hawaii
County Band should always remain. To terminate the program was quite a shock; could a
possible option be to furlough /pay reduce the members?
As the councilman in my distric and the head of the county council, I strongly urge you
both to consider saving the Hawaii County Band for the next fiscal year.
