To Whom it May Concern:
My name is Katie McDermitt and I am a sophomore at Butler University in Indianapolis, IN.
I am writing concerning the decision of cutting funds from the Hawai'i County Band. Being
a college student, no one realizes more than I do that times are tough. I expect to be in
debt for years and years leaving college. But I am a music major. I intend to go out and
perform when I graduate. This would require me to get a job first, however. Ensembles
like the Hawaii County Band are how people make their money. It is one thing to take
music programs away from schools, when music is proven to have only beneficial effects on
the growing minds of children. These are jobs. By cutting funds from these musicians,
you are in fact creating more unemployment. Without this source of income, the more
elderly of musicians will probably not get any other job, which creates more need for
welfare monies and social security benefits. Also, since the Hawai'i County Band has been
around since before Hawai'i became a state, it is a very historically important part of
your state's culture. I would think that, with the now ever popular tourist appeal to
certain aspects of Hawaii, you would want to preserve what little authenticity that was
possible. I an sure my letter must be among the hundreds that you get and look over every
day, and I am not sure if you will even read this or care what I have to say, but know
that if this budget cut passes, there will be more unhappiness in the country than there
will be relief. Is all of that worth a mere $360,000?
