Aloha kakou,
Please add another voice to those calling to save the Hawaii County Band. For 127 years, it has been an
important part of the culture of Hilo Hanakahi, and Ka Moku o Keawe. We are struggling so hard to keep our
unique cultural and "local kine" traditions. They are why people spend all that money to come here. We can't
compete with other destinations on cost and ease of travel. After some 20 years of working with visitors, I hear
again and again that what they appreciate is our uniqueness, our cultural blend, and the way we have preserved
so much of our heritage. Please don't throw it away. Please keep the Hawai' i County Band. Maybe there are
ways to kokua the band, to reduce costs, to have more community involvement, to hold fundraisers... but to get
rid of our band, to dump over a century of tradition, that is not the answer. Please reconsider and keep our band.
Mahalo for your time,
Leilehua Yuen
