Subject: _Please Save the County Bandililil
PLEASE!!! Save the county band??!!? We will be poorer for this loss
Two men, who as far as I'm concerned, have never heard the County Band, the new Director of Parks &
Recreation, Robert Fitzgerald and his Deputy Director, Clayton Honma, decided to "un- fund" this
ensemble to help balance their budget even though it represents only one percent of the Parks & Rec
operating expenses. Keeping their decision under- cover, these guys are planning to slip the budget to the
County Council members this coming week.
Even Isabella Bird wrote about the Hilo Band when she was here in 1873 and since 1883 the band has
played for ceremonies and parades, touching the lives of all the residents of our island since Emma was
queen.
We need to convince everyone in the County Council to stand behind this treasured Hawaii ensemble
and over -ride this decision and preserve our cultural heritage.
