Aloha Mayor Kenoi and County Council members.
One of the most important and valued cultural assets of our wonderful island community is the Hawaii
County Band. The Band has been a cherished tradition that has served many generations of kamaaina
and visitors from all over the world. It is a living link to all of the historical events of this island dating
back to the Hawaiian monarchy. There is no other event in the country more special than celebrating
the Fourth Of July with the annual County Band concert, at Mooheau Bandstand, followed by the
fireworks over Hilo Bay.
As with any other historic artifact or cultural landmark, once it is lost it can never be restored. The
cost of maintaining the Hawaii County Band is miniscule compared to the value received from it. The
talented and generous musicians of the Band can never be compensated enough to cover the lifetime
of learning, experience and professionalism that they bring to this wonderful ensemble. Their devotion
alone is enough justification for the minimal cost of keeping this band funded for the present and in
perpetuity.
