Dear Council member,
I am greatly distressed at the news that some in out county seem to not value the county band and are
willing to throw it in the trash can. While being a recent resident of Hilo, I find myself taking pride in
my new home and great appreciate life here and the Aloha spirit.
I have been a professional musician for my entire life and the first band I played in was the Fort Dodge
Iowa Municipal Band (one of the consistently finest in the country) under the direction of esteemed
composer and bands man Karl L. King After living and working in Los Angeles for many years,
composing music for films and television, arranging music for recording artists and major pops
orchestras around the world (from the Boston Pops to the London Symphony Orchestra). I have attached
a partial credit list to let you know that I have the credentials to back up what 1 am talking about, in allo
humility. I have already completed some arrangements and new compositions for the band and am
looking forward to their excellent presentation.
I know well the value of music in any community and have been amazed at the quality of music here in
Hilo. The County Band is excellent and can hold their own against any such band 1 have heard. It should
be a source of great pride in the community with its long history. The contributions it provides to the
community cannot be measured in dollars. Rather, the value is in the pride of the community and the
education of the public while keeping such band music alive. I have not missed a single concert since
arriving in Hilo last June and am always amazed by the high standards and quality of these fine
musicians. I have gotten to know many members of the band and can share that they find it a very
important part of the community. I have attended every concert since arriving at my new home last June
and have experienced the joy and pleasure of the audience which fills the band pavillion at each event.
All too often when money issues arise, the first thing that people seem we can do without is music and
all the arts. Sad These are the necessities of life and greatly enhance the quality and value of the
community. To simply brush away such a valued asset to Hilo and Hawaii county because of the rather
small cost is ridiculous and unconscionable. I am pressing you to reconsider and keep the values in the
Hilo community and support the education and joy of our population. History has proven that when
economic hard times are experienced, the people tum to entertainment and music for some relief of
stress, anxiety, and depression. And man, do we need it now.
I urge you to make an effort to keep our valuable asset to Hllo in the band. I think the country can do
well without a few other expenditures, many of which mighjt be considered frivilous and benefitting
very few people in our community. I urge you prompt action and listen to your constituents who value
the band and what it stands for. A local band is a long and healthy tradition in America as well as many
other countries. Too many times such tradition is killed at the expense of the community pride and
excellence.
