Subject: Budget Concerns
Dear Council Members-

I am a concerned citizen of the State of Hawai'i urging you to reconsider the decision to defund the
Hawai'i County Band. As an amateur musician, I can speak first hand of the important role a local music
ensemble has by serving its community. Organizations like the Hawai'i County Band are sources of
community pride, patriotism, morale, and tradition. This band inspires young musicians, entertains
families, and celebrates the spirit of Aloha.
I ask you to consider how music affects your own personal life: Does music comfort you in times of
sadness or sorrow? Can a song express your mourning or grief? Do you get excited when a band plays
your favorite song on the radio? Can you celebrate a holiday, a wedding, or a birthday without listening
to music? Do practice your religion or observe traditions though songs? Do you sing lullabies to a
comfort a child?
Consider how important music is to your life and your family. The music provided by the Hawai'i
County Band is equally important to the larger family of the Hawai'i community. Without this band of
musicians, we will be less able to celebrate, cope, rejoice, or simply enjoy.
On behalf of all citizens who enjoy gathering together as a community, I ask you to continue to provide
funding and support for the Hawai'i County Band.
