Subject: Save the County Band
Dear Mayor Kenoi and J. Yoshimoto,
First, let me introduce myself. I am Jacki Pate Credico's mom, a retired music teacher (35 years - -16 at
Hilo Intermediate), played in the County Band while a student of Mr. Urban Carvalho, Sr. at Hilo High,
and a classmate and friend of Urban Jr. Thus, news of the demise of the county Band was so difficult to
accept. The eloquence and passion of letters to the Hawaii Tribune Herald by Kim Springer and Urban
are truly reflected in what I had planned to write to you. Many of my approximately 14,000+ students
throughpout my career learned that music, our "Universal Language ", is food for our souls. It touches
our hearts at so many levels and lives in every culture, at every age and helps us to cope with every
emotion! What a long and glorious history our County Band has had, surviving all those years of good
and difficult times and bringing us so much joy. It is an extension of all the school bands, an inspiration
to many of us who aspired to make music careers, or to some who are just happy to share it as a hobby
with their friends and communities.
To top it all off, we are blessed with Paul Arceo, an excellent Band Master, who is dedicated to bringing
out the BEST in the musicians, and in the varied repertoire and genre of music.
The County Band is, and has been, our legacy and tradition. I humbly ask for your consideration in
finding wjhatever options possible to help SAVE IT. Mahalo.
