RE: Hawaii County Band
Honorable County Council Members:
I am the President of the Sons and Daughters of AJA Veterans and the AJA Veterans .
Council. In addition to the Sons and Daughters of AJA Veterans, the Veterans Council is
comprised of the Club 100` (members of 100` Infantry Battalion), the 442 " Veterans
Club (member of the 442' Regimental Combat Team) and The Military Intelligence
Service.
The Sons and Daughters of the AJA Veterans of the Big Island coordinate the annual
AJA Memorial Service. This service honors all Americans of Japanese Ancestry who
fought for the United States in World War II in both the European and Asian campaigns
while their relatives and friends were facing discrimination and racism on the home front.
The Hawaii County Band has always played an integral part in this service as well as
other Veterans related functions such as the Memorial Day Service and Veterans Parade,
to name a few.
We realize that we are in difficult financial times but the discontinuance of at 127 year
old Big Island institution is unthinkable. We owe it to the Big Island's past, present and
future generations that the Hawaii County Band continue so as to honor, acknowledge
and entertain them in the future. Once gone, it will never return.
We, therefore, the members of the AJA Veterans Council request that the County Council
look into whatever means possible to see that funding for the Hawaii County Band be
continued.
