I am writing in regard to your budget review of the departments that is scheduled for next week, in
particular, the Parks and Recreation Department.

1 have learned that the Director of the P &R Department has informed the members of the Hawaii
County Band that after June 30, 2010, there will be no funding for any member of the County Band,
although the positions will not be abolished
While I understand the need to make cuts in programs because of lack of funds, I do not think that
wiping out a entire program is necessary. There is no regard for what the County Band stands for on our
island, what it provides in the way of enjoyment to the people of Hawaii, and what it provices for our
children and adults who continue to delve into the fine art of music.
While I understand that you do not have a say in how the department chooses to run its program per se,
you do have a say in how much money the deartment can have and along with that, strongly urge the
need to keep our county as diverse as possible. Yes, keeping our parks and services the department
provides is essential to the people of Hawaii, but there are many who enjoy what the band and music
provide as well.
As a forever optimist, I cannot help but think that there must be another way the department
can continue to run this band program, even on a shoe - string. I urge you to bring this up to them in your
departmental review.
