Subject: County Band
Dear Council Members,
I am disappointed and appalled that the Council has decided to cut the funds for the County Band as of July 1.
Surely there must be a better solution. You don't expect band members to continue to play with zero
compensation do you? If so, there will be no band for our community to enjoy at so many events. They are part
of what makes Hawaii County unique & special. You folks don't work for nothing, why should the band? 1 know
some band members and they work very hard. There are rehearsals as well as travel all around our large island
for many performances that bring joy to our lives. Why are the "arts" always the first to go?
I am asking that this issue be revisited and a solution found. Please do not eliminate our band. It is a tiny
percentage of the budget. It is 127 years old!!! It is an excellent band. Virtually everyone I have discussed this
with is outraged. I do not believe you have the support of the community you purportedly serve. And that's just
wrong.
