I was recently informed that the Department of Parks and Recreation has cancelled funding for the
Hawaii County Band for next fiscal year. The result of this act is that the band will cease operations on
June 30, 2010.
The Hawaii County Band is the oldest entity in the county government. Its members have proudly and
loyally served the island of Hawaii since 1883 as a part of the Hawaiian Monarchy, the Republic of
Hawaii, the Territory of Hawaii, and the State of Hawaii.
The Hawaii County Band was founded in 1883 by Portuguese immigrants Joaquin and Jules Carvalho.
Originally named the Hilo Portuguese Band, the group later became the Hilo Band and following the
overthrow of the monarchy, the Hawaii County Band.
Please do not let this historical jewel that has endured through four evolutions of our state's
government, to be lost because of modern budget challenges. The band's funding, a mere 1% of the
Parks and Recreation total budget is a very small part of the total budget of the County of Hawaii.
Surely 1% of the budget is a bargain price to pay for such a valuable asset to our community.
The County Band has been an integral part of the heritage of the island of Hawaii for the past 127
years. It continues to provide live and appropriate music at parades, ceremonies, community events
and concerts. The band serves the entire county and proudly represents the government of the
County of Hawaii.
I ask that you please find a way to preserve this valuable and integral part of our culture, history, and
our community.
