Subject: Hawaii County Band
Dear Mayor Kenoi and County Council members,
I urge the people in control of our county budget to reconsider cutting the funding of the County Band. The loss to
the people of the island of Hawaii seems disproportionate to the savings achieved by doing away with the band.
What will the Merrie Monarch Parade be without the County Band leading it off? What will the Fourth of July
celebration be without the band playing John Philip Souza at Mooheau Park? How many loyal band audience
members will lose their enjoyment of wonderful music at the many parades,' and other public festivities? It seems
wrong that the County Council members should accept a sizeable increase in pay during extremely poor
economic times and then be unable to find the funding to keep a beloved institution that provides free
entertainment for the very people whose tax payments go to pay the salaries. The Mayor's office should be able
to find other ways to reduce costs. The members of the band put out so much time and effort for such a small
amount of money. Their stipend doesn't go far in paying for the time spent rehearsing weekly and travelling all
over the island to bring enjoyment to so many people. Please save the band and cut waste somewhere else.
