Subject: The County Band has Value
Importance: High
Dear Mayor Kenoi, Councilmen and Councilwomen,
When I was growing up in Hilo, there was so little classical music in Hilo that I
couldn't find any recordings in town. The County Band was my first professional
experience as a musician and introduction to that repertoire. (For those who say
the CB is not the Boston Symphony, I would like to say that there are many
musicians in major orchestras who are from small towns like Hilo - who got their
start in organizations like the CB.) To devalue our CB is to say that the cultural life
of our own town /island is not important.
The County Band gives the high school kids something to look forward to. Oldsters
like Wendell Leite show that at 80 yrs. old, one can still play music and be an
active contributor to the musical life of the community. I can't imagine a parade,
veteran's memorial, site dedication, or community celebration without the CB.
Locals and tourists alike enjoy the concerts at Mooheau Park, and around the
island. If you've ever been to a veteran's memorial you know there is a time when
speeches end, and the music begins - and nothing more needs to be said.
Cutting the CB would only be a temporary fix to the budget. But it would result in
the permanent loss of a Big Island institution that is part of the fabric of life in
Hawaii, and would diminish the vitality of our community as a whole. Please
reconsider this decision for current and future generations of Big Islanders and
visitors.
Respectfully yours,
Enid Susan Kuniyoshi
