Subject: Please Save the Hawaii County Band.
Dear J. Yoshimoto and Members of the Hawaii County Council:
My name is Lauretta M. Sewake. I am a retired public school secretary with
33 years of service to our state. I am happily married with three grown sons,
daughter -in -laws, and several grandchildren. I was born, raised and lived my entire
life in Hawaii. Since retiring in 1998 from the state, I have been an active, avid and
involved UH sports fan and booster, primarily as a "IJH Volleyball Auntie."
Although I live on Oahu, I frequent the Big Island as I have many friends, family
and relatives that live there.
I am writing to you in support of saving the Hawaii County Band.
I feel that it will be a very "sad" loss to Hawaii, if the Band is cut from the
County's budget. The Band provides so much fun, entertainment, education,
support, morale, enthusiasm, energy, excitement, solemnity and reverence to its
numerous parades, ceremonies, dedications, fund - raisers and government protocol
events. Every time I hear the Band play our National Anthem and our Hawaii
National Anthem, I feel proud to be and American and privileged to be of
Hawaiian Ancestry. I always get goose bumps when I hear the Hawaii County
Band play "Hawai'i Pono'i."

To me, the Hawaii County Band is a major part of our Hawaiian Heritage. It
was started 127 years ago and is an integral part of all our society today. It has a
long tradition of pride and excellence. The people who perform in this band come
from all walks of life and careers. Most of them are law- abiding, hard - working
members of our society who give extra to Hawaii by practicing and performing
while holding a full -time job and raising a family. I know this to be true because I
have friends, family, siblings of friends, nieces and nephews who have been with
the Band for the past 20 years and more. I believe this to be true dedication.
I firmly believe that cutting out the Hawaii County Band from your budget
will be like cutting out the "heart and soul" of the Hawaii County and people. The
Band has become and is an integral part of the ALOHA that we share in Hawaii
with its entire people.
I ask that you save the Hawaii County Band.
