Subject: Testimony re. Hawaii County Band
Dear Honorable Members of the Hawaii County Council, •
I am most thankful for this opportunity to give this email testimony in favor of keeping our
(Hilo) Hawaii County Band as it is. It is a living Hawaii State Treasure dating way back to the
time of the Hawaiian Monarchy. There is not much else left in our state that can compare to
that!
With so many difficult decisions to make, I realize that it might be tempting to let it go, or just
temporarily lay off the band members while our Hawaii County is going through the worst
economic times of my 73 year lifetime. I believe either would be a serious mistake. Msicians
are similar to great athletes in that they have to exercise and practice to stay in shape. For
musicians it means constant practice and performance to keep all the fine muscles of the
face, especially the lips and cheeks, fine tuned. They also have to keep all their breath
control muscles in perfect shape. I could mention more; but, I think you already get my point.
If ever the band is discontinued it would be most difficult to bring it back. Your current
director is one of the finest that the band has ever had. We could lose him forever to another
band or even another state. Many of our most experienced and accomplished artist would
likely not return. Once disbanded it would take many years to bring the band back to the fine
caliber that we now enjoy.
I grew up in Hilo and the band was a big part of what I loved in Hilo.
Please do not destroy one of our island's most precious treasures!
