HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0711.104 2008-2010Chairman Yoshimoto, Members of the Council, My Fellow Citizens, My name is Mary Lamar Gaddis I am lucky to have lived and taught in Hilo for the past 40 years. For five of those years I played in the Hawaii County Band. As a citizen, a teacher and a music lover, I respectfully ask your support for continuing the funding of the band for the following reasons: FIRST OF ALL • Individual County Band members add their talents to many NON - BAND performances on the Big Island. Without their excellent skills, plays, musicals, skits and other local musical functions would suffer badly. For example, some TWENTY members of the band regularly bring their talents to • The University of Hawaii at Hilo ( for its symphony orchestra and its big -stage musicals) • Our beloved Palace Theater here in Hilo • The Kilauea Theater in Volcano, and • The Aloha Theater on the Kona side SECONDLY, the musicians of the Hawaii County Band are highly talented people who share their valuable musical gifts with the teens and children of the Hilo area. • Many band members are music teachers in the schools This means they practice regularly and hard, as paid professionals in their field. They perform outside the schools on a very regular basis. Few teachers have this added dimension to enhance the quality and depth of their teaching.
