My name is Kelvin Sewake. I have been a volunteer trumpeter for the past 18 months in the Hawaii County Band. I was extremely saddened when the band members at our evening rehearsal on February 25 were notified that the band would be defended. As someone who has served the Waiakea High School Band Boosters for the past seven years, as a concerned band parent, as an active community leader and volunteer, and as someone who has many family members and friends in music professionally, I could not see a 127 year old tradition come to an end. Therefore, I started a simple petition with a cover sheet that described several reasons to save the Hawaii County Band. So far, I have received 4,006 signatures from people in our local island community who support the Hawaii County Band. Therefore, 1 am here to submit to you the names of those people and to testify on their behalf in full support of the Hawaii County Band and to request that its funding be fully restored. As summarized in the cover to the petition, the reasons that we feel the county band program is important to maintain are as follows: 1) Historical - The Hawaii County Band has been in existence for 127 years since 1883 during the Hawaiian Monarchy. It has a rich history and tradition. It is one of our truly living treasures that should not be merely saved, but should be cherished and perpetuated for generations to come. 2) Cultural - Music is so vital to our Hawaiian culture and way of life. It enriches our lives and our well -being whether we are performing as band members or listening as an audience. 3) Symbolic - The band proudly represents Hawaii County in parades all around the island and at numerous special events. They perform for Veteran's Day Service to honor our fallen military heroes and those serving to protect our country's freedom; they perform monthly concerts for the public; and they perform for special events such as the Kamehameha Day draping of the leis ceremony. Imagine what these events would be without them. 4) Educational - Research studies show that brain development of a child is enhanced by music, especially when playing an instrument. The County Band has welcomed numerous Comm. No. / 1,1 b Ref. Tot i�1 .a . Ref. Dote ti 2 20 talented High School band students in its program who have benefitted by playing alongside professionals. Many of these students have gone on to perform in college, obtaining band scholarships, which without the appropriate band experience they would not have received. Some students have even gone on to major in music as their professional career. 5) Networking - The County Band program provides a unique opportunity for band directors from different public and private schools to gather not only to rehearse and perform, but to network with each other to improve the music programs as a whole for our students. 6) Dedicated Employees - The County Band members are among the most loyal and dedicated county employees as evidenced by the longevity of service by many of its members. Members have 10, 20, 30, 40, and even more years of service. The longest standing member is trombonist Wendell Leite who has 64 years with the band! 7) Low Cost to Benefit - The total annual budget is miniscule in comparison to the incalculable benefits to the public and students who have been enriched by the program. It will be a very sad day indeed if this remarkable living treasure comes to an abrupt end after 127 years due to a temporary lack of funding. A long and proud history steeped in tradition will most likely be gone for good. Many, many of us want the county band program to continue in perpetuity because it is Hawaii's ambassador of the true aloha spirit. Please consider seriously what this means to our residents and visitors alike.
