SUBJECT: NO to County Band Dissolution
No one enjoys "lean years," when priorities need revisiting and cuts are inevitable. In
times of hardship, the arts are oftentimes first on the "chopping block," when in fact, they
pay high dividends, cost little, and return on our money is priceless. Think about it: how
much does it cost to "light" one's inner spirit? Priceless. To touch the heart, mind, and
soul? Priceless. To experience sheer joy and magic of the universal language of music?
Priceless.
When was the last time any of us bureaucrats lit someone's inner spirit, truly touched a
heart and soul, or experienced the joy and magic of our shared humanity with folks we
come in contact with as public servants? I dare say — rarely, probably never!
After dipping into the public coffers to give yourselves raises, it seems inappropriate to
cut from the taxpayers who not only vote you into office, but maintain your lifestyle. I
speak for myself when I say I am willing to pay more taxes and /or to give up some
entitlements to support the arts —in this case, our venerable County Band. Please permit
the spark of music to light our way in this bleak economy and keep this spark lit
forevermore.
