Fine Arts ... painting, music, dance, poetry, literature, sculpture, drama ... the Fine
Arts makes up the essence of what it means to be human. Take away the Fine Arts
and we loose our humanity and become just another animal fighting for our
survival.
The discussion today goes far beyond trying to balance the county budget on the
backs of a few musicians. It deals with tearing out a part of our very soul, a
musical organization that has been a part of our heritage for 127 years. Music is
the aural expression of our emotions. When we listen to the band play (in a
parade, in a ceremony, in a concert) we, the listeners and performers, become one.
A family. What a wonderful way to build Aloha.
The Mayor in a letter to the editor the other day seemed to indicate that we might
be able to just plug the band back in at a later date. Won't work! Cancel the band
and it's gone! The director will have to find another position and won't be
available to return. The musicians will have readjusted their lives and may not be
willing to readjust again. Years of traditions and rapport will be severed ... for
ever.
Please do everything in your power to insure that our county band lives on.
