To Whom It May Concern:
Aloha,
I am the Club Director for the Pahoa Boys & Girls Club. I would like to share with you
the voices of our youth and how they feel about being exposed to toxic tobacco smoke.
The children that I serve have heard about Bill 216 and want it to be passed into law. At
the Boys & Girls Club we encourage our members to become advocates for their
generation and community. This past week after discussing Bill 216, we asked our
members to write letters of support to the County Council, asking the representatives to
pass this bill into law.
Attached are the letters from the Hilo & Pahoa Boys & Girls Clubs, but here are some
excerpts from our member's letters:
"I appreciate it (and) personally like it because my parents are both addicted."
- Adrian Aragon, 5th Grader at HAAS
"I support the ban on adults smoking in cars with children because if people keep on
smoking in cars children will probably start coughing. Please do not smoke with kids in
the car."
- Chad Bartolome, 5 Grader at Pahoa Elementary School
"I agree (with this new law) because the adults smoking in the car with kids might
make kids addicted to it or it could mess up the kids lungs."
- Santana Kobayashi, 5th Grader at Pahoa Elementary School
"I agree with this law because I know kids can't just jump out of the car. What I mean
is kids got no choice in a moving vehicle but breath in the smoke (and) that's second
hand smoke."
- Travis Carvalho, 8"' Grader at Pahoa High School
"I think that smoking should be against the law. If this law get approved less people
will die."
- Justin Tejada, 6 Grader at Pahoa Elementary School
"Cigarette companies don't care about us. They will kill as with the chemicals in the
cigarette. When parents smoke they are killing as with the smoke. This is a small step
towards parent's quitting smoking."

Hawaii's keiki deserve to have clean, healthy air to breath. Putting a legal responsibility
for parents to recognize the damage they are doing to their children's lungs (as well as
their own) is the best way to do this. The youth of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Big
Island are in full support of Bill 216 and any bill or law that stops tobacco from affecting
the future of Hawaii's youth.
