HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0711.120 2008-2010My name is Terry Sever. I am a first -grade teacher at Waiakeawaena Elementary School.
I have also been the performing vocal soloist for the Hawaii County Band for more than
20 years. My position is voluntary, yet I have been introduced at the FREE monthly
concerts as "The Voice of the Hawaii County Band." Today, I stand before you not only
as the voice of the Hawaii County Band, but also as the voice of the people.
Because I am a visible presence at the concerts, I am frequently approached by visitors
and kama'aina alike expressing their appreciation of the band. Visitors have commented
to me that the concert they attended was one of the highlights of their trip.
I would like to express my support of the Hawaii County Band in the way that I know
best:
This band is your band.
This band is my band.
It serves the people
Of the Big Island.
From sunny Kona
To rainy Hilo side,
This band was made for you and me.
That tune and those words will probably pop into your head over the next several days,
whether you want them to or not. That is the power of music: the power to teach, the
power to touch, the power to change moods, and minds. As you ponder the words of that
simple song, may it teach you, touch you, and change your heart and mind to support the
voice of the people, and let the band play on.
