Subject: Resolution 308 -10
Dear Councilman Enriques,
I live in Volcano, so you are my councilman.
I am writing to ask that you please support Resolution. No. 308 -10, regarding tropical fish collection in
Kona.
This resolution involves:
1) a "land swap" so that folks can snorkel and dive at Pebble Beach without interference from aquarium
fish collectors. (Pebble Beach is where I usually go when on the Kona side.). Peebble Beach would be
protected, and an equal area near Keauhou, now closed to aquarium collecting, would be opened.
2) a "white list" -- a list of of fish species that may be taken by aquarium collectors. Fish that cannot
live in aquariums, like kapuhili, would be excluded. It's a waste to take them.
3) a bag limit on mature lau -i -pala. These are the backbone of the aquarium fish trade, and are common
only in Hawaii. Their numbers have been depleted, so we need to leave some large adults so they can
reproduce.
Allows a reef area at Pebble Beach to be closed to aquarium collecting while opening a similarly sized
area at Keauhou for limited collecting by lottery thus maintaining a balanced proportion of open to
closed fish collection areas.
Creates a 'white list' of species that can be collected by the aquarium trade (all other species are
prohibited), and a bag limit for large reproductively mature yellow tang.
A proposal to limit the number of licenses for fish collecting in West Hawai'i.
