Attn: Big Island County Council Members:
I strongly oppose Res 308 -10.
As a business leader and tropical fish wholesaler/ retailer for the past 45 years, I
find the components of Res 308 -10 strongly objectionable as it is written.
The tropical fish industry in both Oahu and the Big Island has proved to be
sustainable and is efficiently regulated by the Dept of Land and Natural Resources. Over
this past year, Dan Pothemus, DLNR's chief administrator, confided in us that the
"white list" developed in Res 308 -10 was the result of political pressure and that the
problem on the Kona coast was "not a resource issue"
As an executive council member of the Hawaii Tropical Fish Association, we
have met with many legislators, environmentalists and the DLNR over the past 2 years
trying to develop solutions to on going attacks by environmental activists - and we will
continue to do so.
Lastly,at the last county council meeting a couple of weeks ago, not one tropical
fish collector or wholesaler was invited to testify on our behalf. If laws need to be
changed or resolutions implemented, we need more transparency and dialogue between
user groups in the future.
Please do not move forward Res 308 -10.
