Energy Efficiency Building Standards
To whom it may, concern;
We are concerned that the changes set forth in this code would fundamentally change our
residential construction practices and may ultimately have an adverse effect on our local
construction industry and housing market.
We would therefore like to propose and support that language be added back into this
code to exempt " non- AC spaces ".
Without this exemption, we feel that the additional requirements of insulation and double
pane windows, as examples, will impose an untimely burden'and cost on construction in a time
when we really need incentives to stimulate this sector of our economy. We are blessed with a
very mild climate. Our heating and cooling occurs naturally through our trade winds and mild
temperatures. We therefore feel that these proposed new requirements are not necessary to our
specific location... and might in fact negatively alter the " lifestyle" that we enjoy here. We are
concerned about the these changes will have on our traditional Hawaiian style construction, more
specifically eliminating single wall construction, open screened windows etc.
Please note that we are generally very pro - energy conservation and green building.
However, we do not feel that these proposed changes to the building code are appropriate given
the climate- both economic and weather. We fully support the implementation of a review
committee to set forth amendments to this code. If we can provide further input or participate in
any further discussion on this, please feel free to contact us.
