Hi Leinani,
The administration responded to this same request on March 5, 2010. In our response, we
agreed with Ms. Ford's statement that the tsunami warning "was handled exceptionally well by
Civil Defense and the other administrative departments of the County and the Pacific Tsunami
Warning Center." However, we questioned whether having nine department heads attend a
briefing was an appropriate expenditure of time and effort since the administration has already
conducted an extensive post -event debriefing and evaluation on March 1, two days after the
tsunami warning. There will also be a statewide evaluation on Thursday, March 18, in which first -
responder departments of the County will be participating. Departments and the Mayor's office
have also been keeping in close contact with individual members of the County Council and the
public, and believe we have adequately addressed the questions and concerns voiced. All of
these have been documented and will be used for future improvements.
We thank Ms Ford very much for the invitation for administrative departments to attend the
Public Safety and Parks & Recreation Committee meeting for the purpose of reporting on the
events that occurred and any issues that may need improvement. However, we regret that for
the reasons stated and because of the time commitment involved, we will be unable to accept.
We continue to welcome all questions, comments, and concerns and will be happy to speak with
