As a resident of the Kamuela community I enjoy the peaceful and tranquil environment that living rural can offer. It was our families intent to live in an environment without modern day "necessities" such as (water wasting) car washes and (unhealthy) fast food restaurants. In a town as small as Waimea we were surprised to see so many gas stations. We use only one of them but none the less there are choices for everyone. However, when we heard about the proposed project for church row we were not only astonished that someone would propose such a ludicrous plan for that location but that they would also include the car wash and fast food operation. It is my understanding that there has not been an impact study done as to the effects this will have on our water supply, as well as the environmental damage that will no doubt be caused from the waste water runoff, oils, and other discharge from the vehicles going through the station. As a resident of Puu Nani we frequently experience water shut off due to the fact that the pumping station is (presumably) inadequate as well as the quantity of water diminishing from time to time. There is no comfort in knowing that a car wash will definitely and greatly impact the water supply of our town. This is an abomination if allowed to pass without the impact study of water consumption and waste water run off being performed. Not to even mention the increased traffic on church row, a historical area which should no doubt be preserved as is. It is clear that the greed and selfish motivations of those with money are once again having their way with the island government. An act that must be halted before the beauty of our island is not only diminished but destroyed. I urge the elected officials in our government to deny the permit for construction of the gas station /car wash/minit mart proposed for church row. With so much community opposition it is a wonder to me how we have even gotten to this stage in the application process. I do not know of a single person in our community who is in support of this project. My family and I strongly oppose this project and are hopeful that the planning department will deny application of this project.
