On behalf of the board of the Waimea Outdoor Circle, I want to state our
strong objection to the ill- conceived plan to construct a gas station /car
wash /minimart at historic Church Row and Cherry Blossom Park in Waimea.
Mr. Haynes, the developer from Maui should have gotten a clear
understanding of the many objections the community has during the June
town meeting. Even though the zoning does allow commercial development on
that site, an enterprise such as the one Mr. Haynes wants to build is
inappropriate for this location.
A gas station /car wash /minimart such as the one Mr. Haynes owns in
Kawaihae would most certainly not fit into the environment at historic Church
Row. Besides the religious places in the neighborhood, you must also take into
consideration the other most important neighbors of the area, i.e. the Keck
Telescope facility, North Hawaii Community Hospital and the Senior Center. All
are valuable and important assets of our special community and should be
protected from such an intrusive business.
The County Charter demands of our Government to protect the natural
resources, the view planes and historical sites for all citizens. It is your duty to
take this into consideration as well when making a decision which might or
might not have most negative consequences for our town. Once this historic
place of beauty and tranquillity has been destroyed, it can never be brought
back. Mr. Haynes' plans for the unsightly gas station/ car wash /minimart
would most certainly destroy the most serene place in Waimea.
We urge you, for the good of the Waimea community to deny the permit to
proceed with this terrible project.
