TESTIMONY of Karen B. Clarkson
in support of Resolution No. 345 -0o
I am testifying today to ask your support for the Resolution before you to deny the
application for a gas station/convenience store /car wash in Waimea's most beautiful
location, "Church Row ". Every evening when I pass this place on my way home, I am
awestruck by the beauty of the churches glowing gold in the late - afternoon sunlight
against a deep green backdrop of forested hills and a brilliant green foreground of the
commons, with pink flowering cherry trees in springtime. This beautiful sight will be
ruined forever if the proposed development is allowed. It is Waimea's most scenic spot
and deserves to be protected as an integral part of the character of this town.
As we have seen time and time again around the country and throughout the islands, once
a special place like this is marred by ugly commercial development, we all lose
something priceless and irreplaceable. We must not let this happen here. We have the
opportunity through you, our elected officials, to protect what is unique and beautiful
about our island. You have been charged to consider the effects of development on
community character and natural features, among other factors, and to evaluate how it
satisfies or does not satisfy the intent of the Waimea Design Plan adopted by the Council
in 1996. The resolution before you clearly states how the proposed development will
have a negative impact on the area and how it violates the intent of the Design Plan.
Please consider how your decisions affect not only the Waimea community but the
greater island community and succeeding generations as well, and vote to protect this
wonderful place by adopting the resolution calling for denial of the proposed
development.
Thank you,
Karen B. Clarkson
