I have no qualm with the Mayor's mission and have no desire to nitpick budget details as a way to impeach or discredit the Mayor's budgetary actions. To me, there is no Real Property Tax Issue as some dissatisfied people depict it to be. Tax revenues are necessary for County operations and should be collected according to County laws. Personal philosophical opinions have no basis for assessments, but market values do. Legal adjustments should be applied accordingly to determine each taxpayer's legal obligation. To quibble about who is paying too much or little is wasting County resources and time. Legislation of new laws by the Council is the answer if serious inequities exist. County frugality is also desirable. However, I don't know what expenses are ordinary and necessary to operate County functions adequately. The Mayor has a people service business to run, not a wealth building business. The rules of engagement for investments or divestments or management of County resources are totally different from private commerce and I accept that principle. Many times, constituents' opinions are without diligent analysis and are expressions to the media and its blogs based on personal inconvenience or grudges or disrespect for County officials rather than well thought out opinions. It is my hope that both the executive and legislative branches of the County of Hawaii not engage in bickering over details simply to respond to vociferous claims for a better County budget.
