The Hawaiian Orchid Island Estates (HOIE) Community Association supports Resolution 321-
10, which proposes making a portion of the fuel tax revenue available to organizations that
maintain private roadways.
HOIE is a small subdivision with 205 lots and eight miles of roads in the Volcano area.
Approximately one mile of roads is one -lane paved. The rest is dirt. Road maintenance funds
come from the interest on a $40K certificate (present rate of return less than 2 %) and voluntary
dues ($1,500 collected last year.)
In November 2009, Loeffler Construction estimated the cost of road repair at $45,000.
Needless to say, that ain't happening. However, matching funds on the $10,000 we plan to
spend this year would definitely allow us to address road maintenance issues we must now
postpone a few more years.
The HOIE Community Association therefore urges you to vote in favor of this Grant -in -Aid
program which would allow us to better maintain our roads — not only for our residents but also
for the emergency and business services that regularly use our roads, as well as the general
public.
