I just read this post on Kona Web - and am very disturbed by this news.
*Just wanted to let people know that Mayor Billy Kenoi's new budget calls for a 28.1% property
tax increase for non owner occupied residential. In other terms rental or second home owners
that rent their properties when they are away. There is no increase for owner occupied properties.
This is very unfair since rental owners already pay more than double the owner occupied rate and
there is no limit on increases in assesed values should the market go up. If you live in the home,
increases are capped at 3% per year in a rising market. Just a little insight for those of you
thinking about buying that vacation home. This administration is very hostile towards investors.*
I bought a condo a couple of years ago and while I plan on someday living in it full time, I
currently rent it out. By renting out my condo I generate taxes as well as bring vacationers to the
island who spend money at restaurants, on entertainment, on souvenirs, etc.
I believe that government should embrace investors and work to entice them to buy property on
the island, not punish those of us that are actually generating income. Please do NOT vote for
this tax increase.
