My husband and I are elementary school teachers in the very northern part of California (Eureka). We are planning to retire in our condo in Waikoloa Village that we purchased about 4 years ago in the height of the real estate "frenzy ". In order to afford the mortgage we have been vacation renting it. It is NOT a multi - million dollar residence. We are barely scraping by with rentals down from past years, thus having to drop our rents to attract visitors. With an increase in property taxes we will be forced to consider selling. We are respectful of the Hawaiian culture and have been very supportive in buying local products. There much be hundreds of people just like us who LOVE Hawaii and want the best for everyone living there. However, this tax is truly unfair to hard working people who want to keep the tourist dollars flowing into the county and state. Yes, there are many who can afford this increase but they, indeed, are a minority. We have diligently collected and reported all taxes required of the State of Hawaii. We have spent our money at local stores making improvements on our unit. We respectfully request that you look further down the line at how an increase to these types of properties will ultimately affect the island economically. In the short run there will indeed be an increase to the revenues. However please think beyond the immediate future. There are a number of posts on www.Konaweb.com under the "Moving to the Island" section that would make for good reading. 6/7/2010 Page 1 of 2 PLEASE consider the above before casting your votes. This will destroy a dream for my husband and I as well as for many others who are just hard working `] Com% NO. 1 7. 1 Ref. To: Ref. Date. JUN 10 2010 "regular- type" people. Mahalo for your consideration.
