Unfair increase in property tax rates
We are writing to request that you not support Mayor Kenoi's proposed property
tax increase of 28.2% on the non - homeowner residential classification. Mayor
Kenoi believes that since property values have decreased we will be paying the
same amount. We fail to see the logic in the argument that a 9.4% decrease in
value will wash out the 28.8% increase in taxes.
We are not rich investors. We currently have a very small business in California
which still necessitates our living most of the time in that state. We decided a
long time ago that since we did not like the state of affairs in California we would
not purchase property here and our long term goal is to reside full time in
Hawaii. In California we live in a small portion of the business facility. We do this
simply to afford our house in Hawaii - which is located in Kona Palisades, hardly
a high income neighborhood. If our property taxes increase by 28% we are likely
to consider selling the house and taking our tax dollars elsewhere.
It seems as though there is a lot of waste in the budget — the same problem
plaguing California on a greater scale and one of the reasons we won't own
property here. Why has the budget increased so much that the County cannot
go back to the spending levels of a few years ago before property values
increased?
