Because we chose to invest in the Island, and purchase property, we pay all taxes associated with home ownership there. There is no tax break for us as there is for resident homeowners - we pay the full bill. With no tax exemptions, we already pay considerably more in taxes than our fellow Big Island homeowners. It would be totally unfair and discriminatory for the County Council to approve Mayor Kenoi's proposed increase in taxes from the current homeowners tax rate, 3.42% for all, to an unprecedented 28.2% for non - resident home owners only. In these tough economic times it will be impossible for many people to afford such an increase, resulting in lost revenue to the County when, inevitably, investment property of homes and condos, with out of state owners, flood the already depressed residential sales market on island. This measure, if approved, could result in Tess rather than more County income from tax revenue. Please vote "no" on Mayor Kenoi's proposal.
