Subject: Unfair Property Tax Increase
Dear Mayor and Council Members,
I lived in Kona for nine years until about two years ago when the economic conditions forced me
to move to the mainland for work. I own three homes in Kailua -Kona that I rent for much less
than my mortgage, taxes, maintenance and insurance. I am considered an investor so I pay more
than twice the homeowner rate. I just heard that my taxes will now be increased almost 30 %.
How can you possibly justify placing this huge increase on those of us that own rental
properties? I am barely hanging on as it is and one of my homes is currently valued less than I
could sell it for. I am doing the right thing, working hard and paying my mortgage and taxes.
How is it fair that the homeowners have no tax increase? Is it because most of us can not vote in
Hawaii? I am astonished that the Mayor has chosen to slam those of us that are least able to
defend ourselves with a vote. This tax burden should be shared in a way that is fair to all.
Can you look yourself in the mirror and say this is fair? Please reconsider this unfair increase
and come up with something that is fair and equitable.
