My name is Dominique Campbell. I currently go to Konawaena High School. When I was in 6th
grade I experienced the DARE program. I really did appreciate having it at the time, and I enjoyed it
very much. I also thought it was extremely helpful to stay away from drugs. I discovered a lot of
information about drugs while I went through the program under Officer Harai.
I believe that the DARE program should be available for Middle School, but also through High
School. The peer pressure in High School is very tough: Those students should be allowed to participate
in the DARE program as well. The drug push becomes stronger in the upper grades, and drug
knowledge is key in surviving the temptation. Also many kids don't learn about drugs at home in
Hawaii! The only authority telling them about the dangers of drug use is the school. Therefore, the
DARE program is completely necessary.
I also believe that the DARE program needs to be supported with more funds. The money would
benefit the kids, with campaign advertising, more media tools, and more awareness. DARE in our
Hawaiian schools does make an impact on the kids, and has kept many of my friends out of trouble. I do
not believe the DARE program should be completely removed from schools. This program is unique in
its importance for Hawaii, where we have such high drug abuse everywhere.
