Subject: Proposed Property Tax Rates - June 7 Vote
HAWAII COUNTY COUNCIL:
3 9;91.n .;
We are outraged at the proposed property tax increase on apartments, reported in West Hawaii Today
(Thurs, May 28). A 21.6% increase, really? Or will it be voted in at "only "19 %, so taxpayers will feel
relieved? Either way, with the Hawaii County economy in the toilet, lost jobs, reduced retirement
savings and now a council proposal to reduce value of Big Island property values by vacuuming money
out of the pockets of part-time residents (who, coincidently, have no vote). Does Mayor Billy Kenoi
honestly want to see more job losses and a deeper recession here in this County? There is only so
much a taxpayer can pay before they are forced to leave. And who will take our place at these
exorbitant tax rates?
My husband and I have been property owners on the Big Island for 12 years.
We have always been assessed the apartment rate as we own a condominium and are here from 2 -3
weeks at a time, but less than the required time to qualify for the lower property tax rate as a
resident. Our Hawaii home is not a rental. If anything, we have paid relatively more than any other
classification for county services throughout the years. But now Mayor Billy Kenoi doesn't think we
pay enough.
Our property ownership has helped create jobs and we've paid a variety of taxes (sales, property, auto,
etc) and donated to a variety of wonderful local charities.
This boils down to taxation without representation. There are many of us out here who don't have a
voice. Please speak up for us! Don't kill the goose that laid the golden egg. We have other choices.
